2010 Wildwater World Championships – Day 1

Australian men made a strong start on the challenging river in Sort, Spain, on Day 1 of the 2010 Wildwater World Championships with three top 20 placings. Matt Dalziel lead the way with an outstanding 17th place, 12 years after his last World Championships in which he finished 14th. Stew Bennett celebrated his birthday with his best World Championships result of 18th, just 0.1 seconds behind Matt. Ben Maynard showed his strong whitewater skills with his best World Championship result of 20th, with Mathew French not far behind in 24th place.

Loic Vynisale (France) won the men’s race, finishing just 4 seconds ahead of Achim Overbeck (Germany) and Nejc Znidarcic (Slovenia). These three paddlers were all medallists in race 5 at the 2009 World Cup held in Tasmania on a course of similar length and difficulty, obviously benefiting from their Tasmanian experience!

Tomorrow will see the Women’s and C2 competition.
