Beginners Whitewater Packrafting 25-26 February, 2017

Dates: Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 February, 2017

Venues: Sat: Derwent River, near New Norfolk

Sat Evening: Marieville Esplanade, Sandy Bay

Sun: Picton River, near Geeveston (or an equivalent river/location)

Fee: $240 for course instruction

Canoe Tasmania will be conducting a Beginner Whitewater Packrafting Course with daytrips based out of Hobart over the weekend of the 25th and 26th February. Practical and theory sessions will be conducted including an evening theory session on the Saturday. The course will conclude Sunday afternoon (approximately 3pm) near the Tahune Air Walk (approximately 1.5 hours drive from Hobart). Note that for the course to run there will need to be a minimum number of participants signed on however if the course is cancelled a full refund will be offered.

The course will be run by Australian Canoeing Whitewater Instructors at a maximum ratio of 1:4. The instructors are Dan Hall and Mark Oates and if sufficient numbers are obtained they will be joined by additional qualified instructors. The course is suited to complete novices and those who paddle grade 2 whitewater plus any existing packrafters who are aspiring to learn to paddle grade 3 safely & competently. The focus of this course is on developing safety and technical knowledge specific to packrafts being used on grade 2 whitewater. There will number of in-water practical components and all participants should be prepared for sessions involving capsizes plus swimming and wading in moving water (wetsuits are highly recommended or drysuits if available).

Starting Time & Venue: Saturday 25th Feb 8.30 am – Meet at the Banjos Bakery in New Norfolk and from there we will drive out together to the starting location, most likely at ‘Broken Bridge’. Evening Session: Saturday 25th Feb 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm – Meet at The Hutchins School Power of 9 Campus which is located next to the Hobart Royal Yacht Club on Marieville Esplanade, Sandy Bay. This is the rounded-roof building immediately to the north of the main Hobart RYC building.

Saturday night accommodation: Participants need to organise their own accommodation, in Hobart

Sunday 26th Feb: Meet at Banjos Bakery in Huonville at 8:00 am unless directed otherwise by the instructors during the course. The intention is for the group to then drive together via Geeveston to the Picton River. Depending on water levels and the group there is a possibility that another venue will be utilised.
