Australian Slalom Championships
World Champion Robin Bell, of NSW, showed his class by winning the Australian Mens Canoe Slalom Championships at the Upper Mersey River today by the huge margin of 6 seconds. A large crowd lined the banks to watch the showdown between Robin and his former Australian teammate and friend, Justin Boocock, of Hobart. After first runs, only 0.06 seconds separated Robin, Justin and NSW paddler Matthew Gabb. In second runs, Robin turned on the pace and also achieved a penalty free run to claim his Australian title in 183.48, with Matthew Gabb 189.40 and Justin Boocock a very close third in 190.26.
In the Ladies Kayak, only fractions of a second separated Victoria Milne of Victoria from NSW paddler Katrina Lawrence. Victoria won in 220.31 seconds to Katrina’s 200.53.
The top performing Tasmania was Kate Mollison of Hobart who won the Ladies 16 years kayak race, finishing with the fifth fastest result overall in the womens competition. The Australian Junior Slalom Team member has won every slalom competition she has competed in during the two week long Australian Whitewater Championship program.
Tomorrow the mens kayak competition and teams races will complete the Australian Whitewater Championships.
