The recent long weekend provided perfect conditions at Brady’s Lake for the 3-day Level 3 Whitewater Rescue Course. The course was very well attended, and exposed a diverse range of paddlers to the expert teachings of Thorpie, Tank and Anna. Topics covered included river swimming, throwbag skills, various live-bait rescues, mechanical advantage systems, useful knots, strainer swimming, first aid and foot entrapment rescue. To reinforce new ideas, participants were constantly challenged with rescue scenarios that allowed them to apply their new knowledge to mock real-life situations.
The Brady’s Lake venue was absolutely perfect for the event, with good bank access and multiple channels used to teach a range of rescue techniques.
Many of the course participants will become part of Canoe Tasmania’s Rescue Team for the October 2009 Hydro Tasmania Wildwater World Cup, as well as using their new skills to make Tasmanian rivers safer for everyone.
