TEVA LEA XTREME RACE 2006
Andrew Maynard and Stewart Bennett had a sensational win last Saturday in the Teva Lea Xtreme Race, held on the Lea River in north-west Tasmania. The pair finished the race in 12 minutes 14 seconds, just 8 seconds ahead of the race favourites, AndrewÕs older brother Ben and AustraliaÕs fastest whitewater paddler, Dan Hall, both of Hobart. In the mixed teams, World Cup Freestyle Champion Tanya Faux, from Albury, and Sean Bozkewycz, from Melbourne, were successful.
The race involves teams of two paddlers hurtling themselves down a stretch of whitewater on the Lea River as fast as they can. With two waterfalls and numerous rapids that have gained fearsome names such as ÒScreaming Plastic SurgeonÓ, the river has gained a reputation for providing a very challenging race course.
