The Australian Wildwater Team – all Tasmanians – competed in their first race of the World Wildwater Championships in the Czech Republic on Wednesday.
Dan Hall finished in 15th place, despite severing the top part of his thumb just two days before. Ben Maynard and Mathew French showed their significant improvement this year finishing 24th and 25th respectively. The Men’s kayak field had 71 competitors. Dan was the highest placed non-European paddler, with Ben and Mathew being the third and fourth placed non-Europeans. Not surprisingly, the event was won by a local Czech paddler.
Carol Hurst finished a very respectable 20th in the womens field. Michaela Strnadova of the Czech Republic, who trained in Tasmania in 2003, won her third World Championship title by a stunning 21 seconds.
The team will now contest the World Rapid Sprint Championships on Friday.
